Kamal for a cause

Kamal Haasan on Sunday launched a book donation drive in Chennai for the benefit of the underprivileged children. Titlted ‘Aviva Great Wall of Education’, the initiative was launched at Express Avenue Mall, Royapettah.

The book collection drive will be on till September 9 through drop boxes kept in schools and at corporate offices. Donations can include activity books for children in primary classes, colouring books, alphabet books or story books in Tamil or English.

Speaking on the occasion, Kamal Haasan appreciated the initiative taken by Aviva Life Insurance in association with a leading English newspaper to help less privileged students in the city.

T R Ramachandran, chief executive officer and managing director, Aviva India, said “the overwhelming response from last year has fuelled our ambition to make it even bigger this year and to expand the footprint. In the first phase of the activity this year in Kolkata, we have already collected a large number of books, and we look forward to making it a big success in Chennai as well.”

The collected books will be distributed to children from underprivileged sections with the help of the State's Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan wing, and non-governmental organisations.
